Merry Thanksgiving!!

I'll be the first to admit that it's a little confusing around our house this week.  Are we celebrating Thanksgiving or have we moved on to celebrating the Christmas season?  The Christmas trees are up and decorated, and touches of red and green have been added throughout the house.  But there's a cornucopia on our dining room table anxiously awaiting dinner guests and there's a giant turkey thawing in our refrigerator.

I know the issue of when to put up Christmas decorations can be polarizing.  People have strong opinions about it.  I've heard a lot of people complaining in recent years about Christmas coming too early and not leaving anyone any time to enjoy this November holiday, Thanksgiving.  On the other hand, Christmas is such a special time of year, why not enjoy it as long as possible?

Growing up, we never really made a huge deal about Thanksgiving.  Honestly, to me the most important thing about it was getting to put up the Christmas decorations (while watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, of course).  You can see why I'm conflicted.  But a few years ago, we started celebrating Thanksgiving at our house. I roast a turkey, and both of our families get together all under one roof to enjoy time together and [hopefully] a delicious meal.  The first couple of years, I obsessed over cooking everything myself and tried to make everything just perfect.  I still really enjoyed it, but the past couple of years (especially last year while I was pregnant and my feet were KILLING me :)) I've relaxed and let everybody else help (which they were always willing to do).  So now I feel like we've got a new Thanksgiving tradition, and I love it.  I don't want to rush past it in a flurry of faux snow and twinkling lights.  Then again, I LOVE Christmas time and all the coziness and decorations, so I want to enjoy it as long as I can.

But who decided that Thanksgiving and Christmas have to be mutually exclusive?  Why can't we stuff ourselves with turkey and dressing while "White Christmas" plays softly in the background?  I don't see anything offensive about a cornucopia in the dining room and a Christmas tree in the den!  Besides that, neither holiday is truly about the decorations.  Far from it!  What would Thanksgiving be without family?   And of course Christmas is certainly first and foremost about the birth of Jesus, but celebrating it with family sure is a blessing.  That feeling of warmth and togetherness is one of my favorite things about both holidays.  So blending the two together just makes it twice as nice, right?  I think so.  Merry Thanksgiving !!

Eight Months Old

Evie is eight months old today!  She's babbling more and more, but we have yet to hear her first real word.  Baba is her favorite thing to say right now, but she's not using it to refer to her bottle.  She just likes the way it sounds.  She is getting used to having four new teeth and she loves to test them out by biting down on things and seeing what it feels like.  She is very good at waving.  All you have to do is say, "hey" or "bye" and she puts that arm straight up into the air.  If you ask her where something is (e.g. "where's Wilson?" or "where's Daddy?"), she looks around all over the place until she finds it.  She's not yet crawling, but she is scooting, and she can get pretty far that way, inch by inch.  She could roll where she wants to go, but she much prefers sitting to laying down.  She rolls over in her crib now, and often sleeps on her side and occassionally her tummy.  We have survived our first illness (a cold and ear infection) and our first round of antibiotics (which I had to mix into Evie's bottle, since she was throwing up whenever I gave her any medicine straight- fun times!!).   She's got so much personality now, and we just love spending time with her!!
[We almost had a battle of the wills this morning trying to take these pictures!  I'd like to think that I won, but I'm not so sure. :)  I managed to get some decent ones, but she was just not in the mood to pose!!  (Also, I'm not sure why the photos I edited are showing up with white edges... not sure how to fix that).]

Check out those teeth!!

And Happy Veterans' Day!  I recently read an amazing book, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand.  It is an unbelievable true story about Louie Zamperini, an Air Force lietnenat in World War II.  Since I highly recommend it, I won't give any spoilers.  But I will say that it has given me a renewed appreciation for all those who have given so much to defend our freedom that I so often take for granted.  It has also made me understand a little bit more of what my Papa and PopPop experienced as officers and pilots during the war, things that neither of them talked much about.  What heroes!  Without our troops and veterans, our world would be a different place.

We're Back!

We had a rough week last week, but I think we're slooooowly getting back to normal.  Evie had a cold that turned into a fever that turned into an ear infection.  Not to mention that all four of her top teeth are trying to come in (the front two have finally emerged)!!  Two doctor's visits and an antibiotic later, we're on the mend.  She's acting like herself again and is finally back at school.  Now I guess we can focus on this dreadful time change that Evie doesn't want to have any part of .  :)

Finally feeling well enough for a walk Saturday

Wardrobe Wednesday, Part 8

Sorry for the lack of pictures this week.  Evie has been a little under the weather (teething and a cold), and we've stayed in our pjs the past couple days!

Happy Wednesday!
